What are we like, seriously, is THIS what we have evolved for?

The Koran, the absolute word of God applicable to "all people, in all times, in all places" says, in the 5th verse of the 9th Sura "Then fight and slay the pagans wherever you find them. Seize them, beleagre them and lie in wait for them in every stratagem of war." It goes on to urge Moslems to fight even the mighty nations until they embrace Islam. In Afganistan, Iran and Saudi Arabia, turning away from the faith is punishable by death.

Christian Protestants and Christian Catholics seem willing to kill each other in tit-for-tat-for-tit-for-tat-for..... feuds. In spite of (or because of?) their Bible's exhortation to love thy neighbour and the Ten Commandments, one of which translates fairly accurately as thou shalt not kill.

A Seattle suicide threatening to jump from a bridge held up the traffic. The 28 year old woman was eventually persuaded to jump 150 feet into the canal by angry motorists yelling encouragement to jump so that they could continue on their journey.

Every month roughly a million books are turned (back) into pulp as a result of over-production.

In the UK alone, some 20,000,000 white goods are thrown away every year.

A typical western adult indirectly consumes about 100 times their own body weight in water every day. Interestingly, across the globe, about twice as much water is extracted from underground aquifers as falls in rain. How long, how long.....

At the end of 2000 there were 212,000 administrators and estates staff in the NHS - that is more than 1 for each of its 199,750 beds. Three years previously there were 196,700 administrators for 210,500 beds. These numbers are from a Parliamentary written answer - even the bureaucrats admit that bureaucracy has got out of control.

In 1998, politicians had 1,849 assitants, by 2003 this had risen 25% to 2,280.

Here in UKplc, roughly a quarter of the employed work for the state. About the same again are paid by the state for either being old, being sick or being unemployed. So - about half the electorate is being paid by the state. Whether this is a worrying thing or not depends on your own political philosophy.....

Several people in the population have only one leg, some even have no legs. Taking the population as a whole, the average number of legs per member of the population is something like 1.9995 - therefore most of us are blessed with more than the average number of legs. And that is statistics for you. And statistics are what governments everywhere use to browbeat us into accepting their insanity, sorry..... policies.
